New research from the University of Southern California reveals that 3% of children experience sensory difficulties that worsen with age. This specific pattern is strongly linked to autism. In his write-up, Mike McNulty reports that 82% of children in this group later received an autism diagnosis or showed elevated autistic traits between 3–6 years old.
The study also found:
- 62% of children have sensory difficulties that are temporary and often improve with time.
- 35% of children experience no sensory processing at all.
These findings suggest that intensifying sensory issues can be measured in children as young as six months old. By understanding the connection between early sensory development and school-aged behavior, parents, teachers, and clinicians can better advocate for the services children need.
